unplug the maf ,if it runs the same then the maf should be ok . Mine was doing the same no pulling power , thought it might have been the turbo, but it turned out to be the map (not maf) sensor

the map sensor is to the right hand side of the engine in a plastic pipe, if you can swap with your mate then just change the whole pipe only a couple of jubilee clips and the elec plug on the sensor. If you do a google search you will see what i mean

prob worth doing a vagcom scan to see what error codes you have , obd2 leads avaiable on fleabay for a couple pound , download the  software , free version from "rosstech" website and a laptop running windows xp or win 7

Just an update, looked at it today, swapped mass air meter off a mates galaxy,made no difference, thr boost sensor was different so couldn't swap that, looked at the actuator bar/rod and it works well. I noticed it hardly boosts,I squeezed the inter cooler pipes when it was revved up and very little pressure , took intake pipe off turbo,all impellers are mint,no play and spins free as a bird, any one got any ideas, people have said look at timing but it starts instantly and ticks over perfect????????

Same or similar problem here. It's intermittent. It'll start OK, but goes into a really low power mode. It'll only do about ten MPH, and stalled on a hill which, in fact, was only a slight incline. When I restart it it's a lot better, but when I lift the accelerator then press it again, it has  little  or no power until I stop the engine and re-start it again. I've checked the VNT actuator, which I freed up a couple of weeks ago, and thats very free. It runs the same no matter if the MAS is in or out of circuit. I'm going to put a fault code reader on it, (and clear the MAS fault code) and see what it says, in the mean time, and suggestions would be appreciated.

The MAF sensor does not throw a fault code, unless the output is stuck high or low, e.g. wiring fault.

 

If you've eliminated the MAF sensor, then check the maze of vacuum piping as any leak or blockage will stop the turbo boosting. Look for splits, perished and disconnected pipes at joints. Blockages form (gunge) in the pipe to the MAP sensor (located in the ecu in the case of the mk 1). With mk2 and 110bhp variants mk1 (vnt) there is a vacuum accumulator, (a small plastic sphere), check the pipe to that is intact.

I did want to "Like This", but although yours is the first I've liked, I'm informed I've reached my quota.

 

Anyhow, cut to the chase, thanks for the suggestions, I shall give them a whirl next week sometime. Mine is a MK2 115 PS, 2003 Galaxy with 180K on the clock. I've only had it a few weeks and paid scrap value for it, so I expected to have to spend a bit to get it right.

Cheers for the replies, had a mate plug it on his lap top. Got code 17965 . I've had turbo off and cleaned with innotech, had inlet manifold off and cleaned, also cleaned the inlet / egr valve off and cleaned. Put all back together and it's exactly the same ?

If the VNT mech was free then you probably didn't need to innotech it. Mine was siezed solid. I'd be checking for a vaccum at the VNT end. VAGCOM might let you test the actuator though this may only be available on the registered version.

my first post here i once test drove a sharan tdi with very similiar issues and talking to a few mates in the know i think they said that the injector seals are a common failure and end up pumping fuel into the sump maybe worth seeing if your oil level is high or rising as this is linked to leaking injectors/ injector seals

I should have posted this twelve hundred miles ago.

 

Changed the turbo, and it fixed the problem. I did a lot of part swapping, map sensor, maf sensor swapped the EGR and Boost solenoids around, but in the end spent

I'm absolutely gutted. After changing the n75 valve , inter cooler, and now a brand new turbo it still does not boost right. I can only assume its in limp mode. Any more ideas or can anyone come and look who is an expert? I going to France in it next fir night. Panicking a bit now

You need to get some live data using Vagcom or VCDS lite measuring blocks 003. 010. 011 you need to do this while driving the car at 100% throttle at 3000RPM save the log file so you can look back at it, you need to look at the actual and specified readings for the turbo, MAF and MAP to see if they are within limits

Just spoke to psi tuning in Stoke,not far from me, meant to be very good. He said they won't look at it because it's got ford electrics? Is this right ? He said take it to ford main dealer. Is there anyone local to Crewe Cheshire that has the vag com scanner and knows how to use it.

That's rubbish, the Mk2 TDI is using a VW powerplant & VW gearbox (if it's a manual), consequently it'll have the same engine management and wiring as a similar age VW Sharan with the same engine setup. The Mk2 in TDI or V6 Form has very little Ford anything in it, it's primarily VW tech, only the 2.3 petrol engine (and maybe 2.0 petrol if they ever sold Mk2 2 litre petrols in this country- not sure that they did) was a Ford unit and therefore had Ford engine management and gearbox (in manual form).

Totally agree with insanitybeard, I know time is of the essence now if your friend cannot do the data file you should have a better result going to a VW agent or a local garage that specialises in VW as they will have the gear to do this.

Auto electrician scanned it yesterday as a favour for a mate. Cleared all codes,I took it for a run. Then it came up with 17965. Checked all the n75 and the other 2 solonoids for power. Was ok.cleared codes. Un plugged mass air flow. Took it for a run. Come back. And 17965 was gone. He said either a broken or dodged wire from ECU to boost solonoid or mass air meter. Or maybe timing has jumped slightly. Put a new Bosch air meter on and not cured it. Checking timing today . Borrowed the timing tools off a mate

17965 IS POSITIVE DEVIATION OR IN SIMPLE TERMS OVERBOOST..

 

This is nearly always the turbo vanes sticking, did you dismantle the turbo vanes to clean?

 

Have you tried manually moving the turbo actuator by pulling the lever down, if you have had the turbo off you will know how strong the spring is to overcome the full movement, if it is easy to move then maybe the spring has broken inside the actuator this would certainly give you overboost.

 

You cannot create a log file with a generic code reader you need Vagcom or VCDS lite this will give live informatiom of whats going on, keep clearing the codes will not solve the problem or make it go away.

Temp gauge works fine. Runs at 90. Fuel filter tonight. No change. Auto electrician been out in it today while plugged in. He said it's all reading correct. No codes present. ?????? It's being smoke tested tomorrow on pipes. To be sure

Hi, Check your large air intake and turbo pipes for air leaks as they also can cause boost problems.Then trace the black and green wire on MaF to the Ecu when they made the loom they twirled them together for some reason and they chaff and short .. Edited by cyborg
